Bhava

Astrological House

Definition

A bhava is one of the 12 houses in a Vedic birth chart, each governing a specific domain of life. The bhavas are counted from the lagna (ascendant) and act as the stage on which the planets perform — each planet's effects manifest through the areas of life ruled by its occupied and aspected bhavas.

The 12 bhavas cover all domains of human experience, from the physical body and family to career, spirituality, and liberation. Each bhava has a natural rashi lord in the default zodiac (bhava karaka), but in your personal chart the bhava's lord is the planet ruling whatever rashi occupies that house.

The 12 bhavas and their primary significations:

  1. Lagna (Tanu bhava): Self, body, personality, early life
  2. Dhana bhava: Wealth, family, speech, accumulated resources
  3. Sahaja bhava: Siblings, courage, short journeys, communication
  4. Sukha bhava: Home, mother, happiness, real estate
  5. Putra bhava: Children, intelligence, creativity, past-life merit
  6. Ari bhava: Enemies, debt, illness, daily work, competition
  7. Kalatra bhava: Marriage, partnerships, business relationships
  8. Randhra bhava: Transformation, longevity, hidden knowledge, inheritance
  9. Dharma bhava: Father, teacher, higher learning, fortune, spirituality
  10. Karma bhava: Career, reputation, public life, authority
  11. Labha bhava: Income, gains, social network, elder siblings
  12. Vyaya bhava: Expenditure, foreign lands, isolation, moksha, sleep

Bhavas are grouped as kendra (angular: 1,4,7,10 — strongest for action), trikona (trine: 1,5,9 — most auspicious), upachaya (growing: 3,6,10,11 — improve over time), and dusthana (difficult: 6,8,12 — challenging but transformative).

Common questions

How are bhavas different from rashis?

Rashis are the 12 zodiac signs — they never change position relative to each other. Bhavas are the 12 houses of your personal chart, counted from your lagna. Your 10th bhava (career) might fall in Scorpio (a rashi), combining Scorpionic themes with career significations.

Which bhavas are most important?

The kendra bhavas (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona bhavas (1, 5, 9) are considered the most powerful and auspicious. Planets placed in these houses gain strength and produce beneficial results, especially during their dashas.

What do the 8th and 12th bhavas represent in Vedic astrology?

The 8th bhava (Randhra bhava) governs transformation, death, longevity, hidden matters, inheritance, occult knowledge, and sudden changes. It is considered a dusthana (difficult house) but also the house of deep mystical experience. The 12th bhava (Vyaya bhava) rules losses, isolation, foreign lands, liberation (moksha), sleep, and spirituality. Both are considered challenging for material life but can support spiritual development — especially when benefic planets like Jupiter occupy them.
