Gochara

Planetary Transits

Definition

Gochara refers to the current positions of planets as they move through the zodiac, and how those transits interact with your natal birth chart. In Vedic astrology, transits are measured from the natal Moon sign rather than the rising sign, which produces more psychologically precise predictions.

The word gochara means 'going through' — it describes planets in motion rather than planets frozen at birth. The natal chart shows your fixed karmic blueprint. Gochara shows how the universe is currently engaging with that blueprint.

How Vedic transit interpretation works: In Western astrology, transits are typically read from the ascendant (rising sign). In Vedic astrology, the primary reference point for gochara is the natal Moon sign (Chandra Rashi). The house a transiting planet occupies, counted from your Moon sign, determines its immediate psychological and material effect.

The most important transits in Jyotish:

Saturn gochara: Saturn moves approximately every 2.5 years through a sign and represents the most impactful slow transit. Its transit through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from the natal Moon produces Sade Sati — a 7.5-year cycle of pressure and transformation. Saturn's transit through the 4th and 8th from the Moon produces Ashtama Shani, another challenging period.

Jupiter gochara: Jupiter transits each sign for approximately one year and is the most anticipated benefic transit. Its transit through the 1st, 5th, 9th, and 11th houses from the Moon typically brings expansion, opportunity, and good fortune. Many major life events — marriage, children, career breakthroughs — coincide with Jupiter's transit over the Moon or lagna.

Rahu-Ketu gochara: The lunar nodes move backwards through the zodiac in approximately 18-month intervals. Their transit through key points in the chart (especially the Moon or lagna) often triggers major, sometimes sudden, life shifts.

The 12 houses from the Moon: Vedic transit interpretation assigns specific themes to each house from the natal Moon:

  • 1st (transit over natal Moon): beginnings, health attention, self-focus
  • 2nd: financial attention, family matters
  • 3rd: courage, short travel, siblings
  • 4th: home, mother, property (generally unfavorable for Mars/Saturn)
  • 5th: creativity, intelligence, children
  • 6th: enemies, health challenges (benefics here cause minor issues; malefics fight them)
  • 7th: relationships, partnerships, travel
  • 8th: obstacles, transformation, hidden matters
  • 9th: fortune, dharma, father
  • 10th: career, status (mixed results depending on planet)
  • 11th: gains, income, recognition
  • 12th: expenditure, isolation, spiritual retreat

Gochara and dasha interaction: The most precise Vedic timing comes from combining dasha periods with gochara. When the dasha planet and the transiting planet are the same or strongly related, events corresponding to that planet's themes are most likely to manifest.

Common questions

What is the difference between gochara and dasha in Vedic astrology?

Dasha (planetary periods) shows which planet's energy dominates your life over years or decades — it is the primary timing system in Jyotish. Gochara (transits) shows how currently moving planets are interacting with your natal chart on a day-to-day or month-to-month basis. The most precise predictions come when dasha and gochara agree — when the same planet is both ruling your dasha period and making a strong transit over a key natal point.

Why does Vedic astrology use the Moon sign instead of the rising sign for transits?

Vedic astrology uses the Moon sign as the reference for transits because the Moon governs the mind — the subjective experience of events. When a planet transits the 4th house from your Moon (rather than your ascendant), it is felt emotionally as domestic pressure, even if the physical or material circumstances reflect a different house. This Moon-centric approach gives more psychologically accurate results for subjective experience.

Which planetary transits are most important in Vedic astrology?

The most important transits in Vedic astrology are Saturn (slowest, most karmic), Jupiter (most benefic and expansive), and Rahu-Ketu (most transformative and fated). Jupiter transiting over the natal Moon or lagna typically brings opportunity and growth. Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from the Moon creates Sade Sati — a 7.5-year pressure cycle. Rahu-Ketu transits often produce sudden and unexpected life changes.
