In Vedic astrology your life does not unfold evenly — it moves through planetary periods called dashas. The Vimshottari Dasha system, the most widely used, divides your life into major periods (Mahadashas) ruled in turn by the nine planets, each lasting between six and twenty years. Within each runs a sequence of sub-periods (Antardashas) that colour the larger theme.
This is why two people with similar charts can be living completely different chapters: the timing is set by the dasha. A Jupiter period tends to expand and bless; a Saturn period disciplines and tests; a Rahu period disrupts and reroutes. Knowing your current Mahadasha and Antardasha explains why certain themes — work, love, upheaval, growth — dominate right now.
The dasha is calculated from the Moon's exact position in its nakshatra at birth, which is why an accurate birth time matters. This calculator shows your current period; your full chart reading interprets what the period means for you specifically and when it shifts.
A dasha is a planetary period. The Vimshottari Dasha system divides your life into major periods (Mahadashas) ruled by different planets, each 6 to 20 years, with nested sub-periods (Antardashas). The ruling planet colours the themes, opportunities, and lessons of that stretch of life.
Your chart shows potential; your dasha shows timing. The same chart plays out very differently depending on which period is active. Your current dasha explains why certain themes are dominant right now.
The Mahadasha is the major life period (e.g. a 16-year Jupiter Mahadasha). Within it run Antardashas — shorter sub-periods ruled by each planet in turn, which flavour the major period.
Vimshottari Dasha is calculated from the exact position of the Moon in its nakshatra at birth, which is why accurate birth time matters. Stellr computes it using the Swiss Ephemeris to arc-second precision.
