Jupiter - The Great Benefic
Guru (Jupiter) is the planet of wisdom, expansion, abundance, and divine grace in Vedic astrology. Called the Deva Guru (teacher of the gods), Guru shows where blessings multiply and life expands most naturally in your birth chart.
Guru is the largest planet in the solar system and the most benefic in Vedic astrology. Where Shani restricts, Guru expands. Where Rahu creates desire, Guru brings fulfillment. Classical texts consistently name Guru the greatest protector in a chart - when Guru aspects the lagna or the lagna lord, it confers a protective quality that can mitigate many other challenges.
Guru's core significations:
Guru by house: Guru's house shows where life is naturally blessed and where expansion comes most easily. Guru in the 1st house often gives a generous, philosophical personality and protection to health. Guru in the 5th (its natural house of joy) strengthens intelligence, creativity, and children. Guru in the 9th (its most auspicious house) confers wisdom, divine grace, and good fortune. Guru in the 8th or 12th, while sometimes creating waste of resources, also deepens spiritual sensitivity.
Guru Mahadasha: In Vimshottari dasha, Guru rules a 16-year period. The Guru mahadasha typically brings expansion, opportunity, marriage, children, higher learning, and spiritual deepening. It is generally considered one of the most fortunate dashas - though its specific results depend heavily on Guru's natal strength, sign, and house placement.
Guru transit (Jupiter transit): Guru transits each sign for approximately one year, making an annual Jupiter transit one of the most watched astrological events. A Jupiter transit over your natal Moon, lagna, or key planets can bring significant opportunities, relationships, and life expansion. The transit of Guru through the 11th house from the Moon is particularly associated with income growth and social recognition.
Guru and relationships: In a woman's chart, Guru is considered a karaka (significator) for the husband. Guru's strength and placement heavily influence the quality and timing of marriage. In men's charts, Guru rules children and the teacher archetype - the kind of wisdom and guidance available in one's life.

Planetary Period System
A dasha is a planetary period in Vedic astrology that governs a specific phase of your life. Each planet rules a slice of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle. During its dasha, that planet's themes, strengths, and karmic patterns become the dominant story.
Major Planetary Period
A mahadasha is the major planetary period in the Vimshottari dasha system, lasting anywhere from 6 to 20 years depending on the ruling planet. It represents the dominant karmic theme of that life phase, with the ruling planet's nature colouring all major events and opportunities.
Ascendant / Rising Sign
Lagna is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. It sets the first house of the chart, determines house rulerships, and acts as the chart's structural foundation - the body, self-expression, and life path.
Planetary Combination
In Jyotish astrology, a yoga is a specific planetary combination in the birth chart that produces a defined effect - ranging from great wealth and fame to spiritual liberation. Hundreds of yogas are catalogued in classical texts, each with precise conditions for formation and predictable results.
Vedic Zodiac Sign
Rashi is the Vedic term for zodiac sign. The 12 rashis are calculated using the sidereal zodiac (fixed stars), placing them approximately 23° behind their Western tropical counterparts. In Jyotish, the moon's rashi at birth is often considered more personally significant than the sun's rashi.
Lunar Mansion
A nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into equal 13°20′ segments. The moon's placement in a nakshatra at birth reveals personality nuances, emotional rhythms, and karmic themes that the broader rashi (zodiac sign) cannot capture.
Planetary Transits
Gochara refers to the current positions of planets as they move through the zodiac, and how those transits interact with your natal birth chart. In Vedic astrology, transits are measured from the natal Moon sign rather than the rising sign, which produces more psychologically precise predictions.
Guru (Jupiter) represents wisdom, divine grace, abundance, expansion, and dharma. It is the most benefic planet in Vedic astrology. Where Jupiter sits in your chart, life expands most naturally - blessings accumulate, teachers arrive, and opportunities multiply. Guru also rules children, higher knowledge, religion, and long-distance travel.
Jupiter transits each zodiac sign for approximately one year. These annual transits are among the most important in Vedic astrology. When Jupiter transits your lagna (rising sign), natal Moon sign, or key house, it typically brings expansion, opportunity, marriage, children, or career growth during that year. The 11th house transit from the Moon is especially associated with income increase and social recognition.
The Guru Mahadasha lasts 16 years and is generally considered a period of expansion, learning, opportunity, and spiritual growth. It often brings marriage, children, higher education, foreign connections, and career advancement. The quality of the Guru dasha depends on Jupiter's natal placement: a strong Jupiter (especially in Cancer, Sagittarius, or Pisces) can make this one of the most fortunate periods of life; a weak or afflicted Jupiter may bring expansion in undesirable areas.
