Planetary Aspects in Vedic Astrology
Drishti is the Sanskrit term for planetary aspects - the sight or glance that one planet casts upon another planet, a house, or a zodiac sign. Unlike Western astrology's degree-based aspects, Vedic aspects are house-based. Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, and Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have additional special aspects unique to Jyotish.
Drishti literally means 'sight' or 'vision' in Sanskrit. In Vedic astrology, planets are not passive objects - they actively 'look at' or 'aspect' specific houses and the planets placed in those houses. This sight is considered a real influence, capable of modifying the results of the aspected house or planet.
The universal 7th aspect: All 9 planets in Jyotish aspect the 7th house from their own position. This means every planet in your chart is exerting influence on the house that is 7 houses away from it. For example, a planet in the 1st house aspects the 7th house; a planet in the 3rd house aspects the 9th house; and so on.
Special aspects (unique to Vedic astrology): Three planets have additional special aspects beyond the universal 7th aspect:
| Planet | Special Aspects (in addition to 7th) |
|---|---|
| Mars (Mangal) | 4th and 8th houses from itself |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 5th and 9th houses from itself |
| Saturn (Shani) | 3rd and 10th houses from itself |
These special aspects are the most distinctive feature of the Vedic aspect system. A Saturn in the 1st house, for instance, aspects not only the 7th (universal), but also the 3rd and 10th - Saturn's disciplining energy reaches three houses simultaneously.
Rahu and Ketu aspects: Classical texts vary on whether Rahu and Ketu aspect. In the Parashari tradition, they are generally assigned 5th and 9th special aspects (like Jupiter), though some schools give them 5th, 7th, and 9th or other variations. Stellr follows the majority Parashari interpretation.
Quality of aspects: Not all aspects are equally strong:
Benefic vs. malefic aspects: The quality of an aspect depends on the nature of the aspecting planet:
Aspect vs. conjunction: In Vedic astrology, a conjunction (when two planets share the same house) is generally considered stronger than an aspect. But Jupiter's aspect, even from a distance, is one of the most protective influences in the chart.
Stellr identifies key planetary aspects in your chart and explains how each planet's drishti is modifying the houses and planets it touches in your natal birth chart.

Planets of Vedic Astrology
Graha is the Sanskrit term for the planets used in Vedic astrology. The nine grahas - Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu - form the complete set of influences analyzed in a Jyotish birth chart. Unlike planets in astronomy, Rahu and Ketu are mathematical points, not physical bodies.
Ascendant / Rising Sign
Lagna is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. It sets the first house of the chart, determines house rulerships, and acts as the chart's structural foundation - the body, self-expression, and life path.
Astrological House
A bhava is one of the 12 houses in a Vedic birth chart, each governing a specific domain of life. The bhavas are counted from the lagna (ascendant) and act as the stage on which the planets perform - each planet's effects manifest through the areas of life ruled by its occupied and aspected bhavas.
Planetary Combination
In Jyotish astrology, a yoga is a specific planetary combination in the birth chart that produces a defined effect - ranging from great wealth and fame to spiritual liberation. Hundreds of yogas are catalogued in classical texts, each with precise conditions for formation and predictable results.
Saturn - The Lord of Karma
Shani (Saturn) is the planet of karma, discipline, delay, and long-term consequence in Vedic astrology. Where Shani sits in your chart, life demands patience, perseverance, and structural integrity. It delivers rewards slowly - only after the work is done.
Jupiter - The Great Benefic
Guru (Jupiter) is the planet of wisdom, expansion, abundance, and divine grace in Vedic astrology. Called the Deva Guru (teacher of the gods), Guru shows where blessings multiply and life expands most naturally in your birth chart.
Mars - Drive, Courage, and Action
Mangal (Mars) is the planet of energy, drive, courage, ambition, and conflict in Vedic astrology. Where Guru expands and Shukra attracts, Mangal initiates and asserts. Its placement in your chart shows how you act, what ignites your passion, and where force - whether creative or destructive - tends to manifest.
The North Node of the Moon
Rahu is the north node of the Moon in Vedic astrology - a shadow planet without physical form that represents unfulfilled desires, karmic hunger, and the soul's evolutionary direction in this lifetime. Where Rahu sits in your chart, obsession and ambition intensify.
The Science of Light
Jyotish is the Sanskrit name for Vedic astrology - literally 'the science of light' (jyoti = light; isha = lord). It is one of the six Vedangas (limbs of the Vedas) and one of the oldest predictive sciences in continuous use. Jyotish combines astronomical observation with karmic philosophy to interpret birth charts, time life events, and understand the soul's trajectory.
Drishti means 'aspect' or 'sight' in Sanskrit - the influence a planet casts upon the house 7 positions away from it and, for Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, on additional houses as well. All planets aspect the 7th house from their position (the universal aspect). Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th, and Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th. Jupiter's aspect is considered the most benefic in all of Jyotish - it blesses and protects any house or planet it touches.
In Western astrology, aspects are calculated by exact angular degrees between planets (trine = 120°, square = 90°, etc.) and require precision within an orb. In Vedic astrology, aspects are house-based: a planet in the 3rd house aspects everything in the 9th house, regardless of the exact degree. The Vedic system uses no orbs and has unique special aspects for Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn that have no Western equivalent. The Mars 4th/8th aspect and the Saturn 3rd/10th aspect are entirely absent from Western astrology.
Jupiter's aspect (drishti) on a house or planet is one of the most auspicious influences in Vedic astrology. Jupiter aspects the house 5 positions away, the house 7 positions away (universal aspect), and the house 9 positions away. When Jupiter aspects the lagna (1st house), it provides health, wisdom, and protection. When it aspects the 7th house, it supports marriage and partnerships. When it aspects the 10th house, it can support career success and public recognition. Jupiter's sight is considered a blessing that can partially counteract malefic influences.
