Understanding Vedic Compatibility Calculator

Vedic compatibility analysis — called kundali matching or guna milan — is the most detailed astrological compatibility system in the world. It goes far beyond comparing sun signs. The classical Ashtakoota system evaluates eight specific factors from the Moon signs and nakshatras of both people, producing a score out of 36 points (36 gunas).

The eight factors are: Varna (spiritual compatibility, 1 point), Vashya (mutual influence, 2 points), Tara (destiny alignment, 3 points), Yoni (temperament and intimacy, 4 points), Graha Maitri (planetary friendship, 5 points), Gana (nature match, 6 points), Bhakoot (relative moon positions, 7 points), and Nadi (physiological and karmic constitution, 8 points). Nadi is the highest-weighted factor and receives special attention in classical texts.

Beyond Ashtakoota, Vedic analysis also considers Mangal Dosha (Mars energy patterns in key houses), dasha synchronisation (whether major life periods align), and synastry of the full charts. A couple with a moderate Ashtakoota score but strong dasha alignment and compatible Lagna lords may have better long-term potential than one with a high Ashtakoota score but misaligned planetary periods.

Common questions

What is Vedic compatibility (kundali matching)?

Vedic compatibility compares two birth charts to assess emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual harmony. It uses Ashtakoota (8-factor scoring out of 36), nakshatra matching, Mangal Dosha assessment, and dasha synchronisation. It is the traditional method used for marriage analysis in Jyotish.

What is Ashtakoota?

Ashtakoota is an 8-factor compatibility system scoring out of 36 points: Varna (1pt), Vashya (2pt), Tara (3pt), Yoni (4pt), Graha Maitri (5pt), Gana (6pt), Bhakoot (7pt), and Nadi (8pt). A score of 18+ is generally acceptable; 24+ is considered good; 28+ is excellent.

Can compatibility be determined without birth time?

Partially. Moon sign and nakshatra compatibility (Ashtakoota) can be calculated with just date and location if the Moon doesn't change sign that day. Ascendant-based analysis and precise dasha synchronisation require exact birth times for both people.

What score is considered good in Vedic compatibility?

Ashtakoota: 18+ out of 36 is acceptable, 24+ is good, 28+ is excellent. However, Nadi Kuta (8 points) and Bhakoot Kuta (7 points) carry special weight — a mismatch in these, especially Nadi, can indicate challenges even with a high overall score.

What is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart. It is assessed for strength and whether the partner's chart has a balancing Mars placement. Many classical cancellations of the dosha are recognised in authoritative texts.

What is Nadi Dosha?

Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi among the three — Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), and Antya (Kapha). It is the highest-weighted Ashtakoota factor and is traditionally associated with health and constitutional compatibility. Various classical cancellations are recognised.

How does dasha synchronisation affect compatibility?

Dasha synchronisation checks whether both partners are in compatible Vimshottari Dasha periods at key life milestones. When both are in growth-oriented periods simultaneously, shared ventures tend to flourish. Misaligned periods can create divergent life priorities despite strong chart synastry.
