A Vedic birth chart — called a kundali or janma kundali in Sanskrit — is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth, viewed from your birthplace. It shows all nine classical Vedic planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) distributed across twelve houses and twelve signs of the sidereal zodiac.
The sidereal zodiac is fixed against the backdrop of actual stars rather than tied to the seasons, as in Western astrology. The Lahiri ayanamsa correction — approximately 23°51' in 2024 — converts tropical planetary positions to their true sidereal positions. This is why your Vedic Sun sign is typically one sign earlier than your Western sign.
Stellr's birth chart calculator uses the Swiss Ephemeris DE431 dataset, accurate to arc-second precision. In addition to the primary D1 (Rasi) chart, the engine computes 15 divisional charts (Shodashavargas) including Navamsa (D9) for soul path and relationships, Dashamsa (D10) for career, and Saptamsa (D7) for children. The Vimshottari Dasha timeline — a 120-year planetary period system — is also computed, showing which planetary period is currently active in your life.
A Vedic birth chart (kundali) is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth, using the sidereal zodiac and Lahiri ayanamsa. It shows the positions of nine planets in twelve signs and twelve houses, revealing personality, life themes, strengths, challenges, and timing patterns.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed against stars) rather than the tropical zodiac (season-based). Your Vedic sun sign is typically about 23–24 degrees earlier than your Western sign — often placing it in the previous sign. Vedic astrology also emphasises the Moon sign and Nakshatra far more than the Sun sign.
You need your exact date of birth, time of birth (as precise as possible), and place of birth. Birth time is essential for calculating your ascendant (Lagna) and accurate house placements. A difference of two hours can shift the ascendant to the next sign.
Stellr uses the Swiss Ephemeris DE431 dataset and Lahiri ayanamsa. Planetary positions are accurate to within arc-seconds for dates between 13,000 BCE and 17,000 CE — the same engine used by professional Jyotishis worldwide.
Your ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It represents your physical body, outer personality, and how others perceive you. It sets the structure of all 12 houses in your chart and is the most personally specific point in the chart.
Divisional charts are derived by dividing each zodiac sign into smaller segments. The D9 (Navamsa) reveals soul path and relationship patterns; the D10 (Dashamsa) focuses on career; the D7 (Saptamsa) on children. Stellr computes all 16 standard Varga charts.
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary period system that divides your life into major periods (Mahadashas) ruled by different planets. Each planet's period activates different life areas based on its chart placement. The current active dasha explains much about your present life themes.
