Understanding Vastu Direction Guide

Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and placement. It maps the home onto the Vastu Purusha Mandala — a grid of eight directions plus a sacred center, each governed by a deity, a planet, and one of the five elements. Aligning rooms with their natural direction is said to let energy, light, and air flow the way the space intends.

The northeast (Ishanya) is the most sacred zone, ruled by Jupiter and the water element — ideal for prayer and kept open and light. The southeast (Agneya) belongs to Agni, the fire deity, and is the natural home of the kitchen. The southwest (Nairutya) is heavy and grounding, the right place for the master bedroom and storage. Each direction has a purpose, and a few things best kept away.

Vastu tunes your environment; Vedic astrology tunes your timing. Both begin from where and when you are. This guide gives the directional principles for free; your full birth chart maps the periods, relationships, and purpose that play out within that space.

Common questions

Which direction should the kitchen face in Vastu?

The southeast (Agneya) is the ideal zone for the kitchen, as it is ruled by Agni, the fire deity. Cook facing east. If the southeast is not possible, the northwest is the accepted alternative. Keep the kitchen out of the sacred northeast.

Which is the best direction for the master bedroom?

The southwest (Nairutya) is the best zone for the master bedroom. It is heavy and grounding, lending stability and authority to the heads of the household. Sleep with your head toward the south or east, and avoid the northeast and southeast.

Why is the northeast so important in Vastu?

The northeast (Ishanya) is the most sacred direction, governed by Jupiter and the water element. It is reserved for prayer, meditation, and an entrance, and is kept open, light, and free of toilets, kitchens, and heavy structures.

How does Vastu relate to Vedic astrology?

Both come from the same Vedic tradition and read meaning from where and when you are. Vastu aligns your physical space with the directions and elements; Vedic astrology maps your inner timing, relationships, and karmic patterns. They are complementary.
